Reading “Re-Trumped” – by Françoise Girard

To mark the launch of SPW’s new website, we invited some long-term partners to explore our archive and select a piece of content (a publication, an article, a newsletter issue, etc.) to highlight as a relevant contribution to our field of research and action and to write a few lines explaining why this “something” is important.

Below, we share Françoise Girard’s generous words about our recent special “Re-Trumped”. Françoise Girard is an author, advocate and expert on women’s health, human rights, sexuality, HIV and AIDS and feminist movements. For over 20 years, she has advocated for women’s rights and gender justice in close partnership with feminist activists from Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Girard previously served 8 years as President of the International Women’s Health Coalition (IWHC) and has collaborated with us since the very beginning, in our first research project: “Global Implications of U.S. Domestic and International Policies on Sexuality”.

Reading “Re-Trumped”

By Françoise Girard

Re-Trumped’s painstaking analysis highlights what many commentators have neglected (or refused?) to point out, that is, just how central transphobic, misogynistic and racist appeals were to Trumpism’s resurgence in November 2024. As the analysis rightly notes, while Trump voters don’t necessarily believe these attacks to be true, they “are exhilarated by the window this opens for them to openly express abjection and hatred for others.”
