Sexual politics in May 2015

29 May 2015

In early May, SPW re-launched its website. Its new architecture allows an easier access to our products, publications and other contents. In particular, we call your attention to new SPW products, the good news of observer’s status granted by the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights to the Coalition of African Lesbians (CAL) and our short reflection of intersectionality and sexual politics.

The International Day Against Homophobia ad Transphobia (IDAHOT – May 17th) is also to be underlined in the period. The SPW site has collected information about events marking the day in different places around the globe and republished a Scott Long’s article in which the author tells about the situation of sexual and homophobic violations in Egypt.

Not less important, May 28th marks International Day of Action for Women’s Health. This year feminist organizations and social media platforms have released posters and articles focused on abortion and institutional violence that restricts and violates women’s reproductive rights. Campaigns that took place around the world were complied and circulated by International Campaign for Women’s Right to Safe Abortion (here, here and here). We also call attention to statements delivered by Amnesty International; Women’s global network for reproductive rights and the website of The Asian Campaign for Abortion Rights.

The reasons for these calls and campaigns are unequivocal. In Latin America for example  May 2015 was marked by the regrettable case of the Paraguayan 12 year old girl victim of rape to whom abortion was denied and whose mother has been arrested under the accusation of parental relapse. The case has gained the front pages and screens and has mobilised national and global protests.
