The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, meeting at its 55 Ordinary Session held in Luanda, Angola, from 28 April to 12 May 2014, delivered a groundbreaking resolution on human rights violations on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. This outcome is the result of systematic work performed by civili society organizations defending the rights of persons whose sexual orientation and gender identity differ from dominant heteronorms. It is also a fundamental step towards shifting the geopolitical pattern of the debate and contextually grounding it in the continent.
And here to read statement of a coalition of organisations and human rights defenders working to advance human and peoples’ rights welcoming the resolution.
